Some real (not on line) shops are selling these books or similar books. Perhaps you could visit one of those shops and buy the books directly (or similar). Maybe the ANWB has some too, but I doubt they have something useful for sailors except maps.

Official Imray distributors : click and google is your friend as well :)

my trip begins on Saturday, so unfortunately no time to wait for another delivery.... But I will keep in mind ANWB Almanak, and maybe see "how can I make a copy" ... tomorrow....

I was not suggesting you literally "copy" one. They're probably available in any ANWB shop. You could try Goes (Singelstraat 13) or Middelburg (Nieuwe Burg 40). Or maybe in one of the larger boat equipment shops.

Another very useful book about sailing in the Zeeland area is "Vaarwijzer Het Deltagebied" by Olav Cox. In Dutch again, but hey,... See Vaarwijzer Het Deltagebied

I've seen both books at "Kok Watersport" in Rotterdam, which has a nice assortment of nautical books, but that might be a bit far from your area.

Jeroen

Ordering from Imray is already late... Well, probably I will have to drive from Kortgene to Rotterdam to den Haag tomorrow.. will see what can I find in Bergen op Zoom or Kortgene...

I already rented the same boat and there was a huge book, and I think it was called "Almanak" something. It contained the tide tables I think (did not have too much time to have a look.)...

Dear All,

I think I became sailing addicted... My sailing trip was one of the most exciting ones in my life... Much more fun than I have imagined, and much less danger and difficulties than I was making worries about (tides, locks etc.) Lovely romantic small port-villages, nice people, nice weather.

Crew: my wife and myself.
Total days: 9.
Route: Veerse Meer - Krammer - Volkerak - Hollands Diep - Dordrecht - Oude Maas - and back...

Funny enough but one of the most and challenging situations was when we were going through the Dodrtse Kil, a huge boat generated waves of at least 2 m amplitude. Entering the very narrow port and "parking" place in the port of Dordrecht backwards was a considerable adrenalin kick, but managed it without any mistake. We were sailing also in winds of 5 with tops of 6 and quite big wawes. Really fun! The end of the day when we sailed the longest distance in one day (80 km! based on what the gps was saying: from Stellendam Oude-Tonge) was also challenging. It was close to 10 o clock, the wind speed was increasing (I think 5), with also increasing waves, and ugly black clouds were coming from NW and it seemed that there was already heavy rain over Grevelingen.

Unfortunately my wife did not have the courage to go out to open see, as my intention was to come back from Stellendam to Oosterschelde on the open see. Maybe it was a wise decision at the end, considering that there was a bit of bad weather that day on the see. Can anybody tell me how does it feel on the open see with a 7m boat and bit of omveeer?? :)

The book "Vaarwijzer Het Deltagebied" was quite good, (thanks Jeroen for the title), I found it in the shop in Kortgene. I had the Almanak on the rented boat and maps, but only Veerse Meer and Oesterschelde. The havenmejster in Ooltsgenplaat gave us some older maps he did not need, so like that we had the full area.

Now that I became addicted, I am already considering buying my own boat, but it is not a simple task as:

* would not be bad to have a longer boat ( > 10m)
* not sure yet that this passion will last long :(
* no idea what it cost to transport a ~10m boat to south (croatia for example)
* no idea if I can find a place for example at Antwerp
* budget < 10k

I saw already boats ~7m for 4000 Euros. I think such a boat keeps its value, so if I will be sure that I want a longer, will be able to sell it for more or less the same price....

Not only it is a wonderful area for sailing, but perfect place to learn. One has a wrong idea that sailing is a very expensive sport, and difficult and expensive to learn, but I was positively surprised about the contrary. Thanks to the more liberal view in Nederlands, you are not annoyed by licenses and authorization, everything is based on mutual respect and trust.

OK. I was curious because your English was quite fluent but had some small mistakes (consequently "see" instead of "sea"), but you pronounced the names of the dutch cities and places so perfectly I was wondering if you were making a beautiful practical joke..

No offense, and happy sailing!

no offense.. indeed funny mistake... and funny that I carried it on... Maybe it was somewhere in my head the German name "see", as I would call those "seas" more lakes than seas... :) By the way which one of them do you call "sea" and which one lake. The dutch names do not contain this info... so difficult to name them in other language...

yes... could be defined like that... Well the reality is that first nickname came to my mind was zigzag from the zig-zag you sail against the wind... Zigzag is taken and as I did not want to force too much my imagination it became zagzig. By the way are you sailing in zig-zag or zag-zig? ... I think correct answer is: it depends... you start starbord or port side :)

Now you confused me... I mean I was not aware that zee=meer and meer=see (I mean that it is the opposite). However in German you can say both Meer and See for the sea...

But what I was referring to, is that I was not sure if you would call for example the Oesterschelde a lake (meer) or sea? Or simply a delta. Do you call Westerschelde delta or lake? Is Hollands Diep just a channel or a lake? What about Volkerak/Krammer?

rsv schrijft:

thanks for the clarification...

however from Wikipedia (should have searched there from the beginning :) )

"De Oosterschelde is een zeearm in de provincie Zeeland"

"De Westerschelde is een estuarium (verbrede, veelal trechtervormige riviermonding) in de Nederlandse provincie Zeeland"

So probably the correct is to say that Oosterschelde used to be a "rivier", but now it is just a "golf". (it does not seem to have at the moment a natural connection between Schelde and Oesterschelde)

Maybe then calling Westerschelde a "rivier" is then also exaggerated, as it is itself the monding, and the rivier is Schelde...

isn't that correct?
